SUMMARY:The Salem Witchcraft Trials and ‘Moldy Bread’: A Case Study...
DESCRIPTION:On April 2\, 1976 Science Magazine published an article by Linnda R. Caporael which posited that during the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials\, the visions of specters and painful physical sensations described by the girls who claimed to be afflicted by witches could have been caused from eating bread made with flour tainted by ergot\, a naturally occurring fungal hallucinogen that grows on rye grain under certain growing conditions. \nWhile experts immediately debunked this claim – the historical and medical data used to support the hypothesis was cherry-picked – the claim went viral in a pre-Internet age. More than four decades later\, belief in this is still pervasive. \nThis program will unpack how this explanation about a lurid chapter in American history was born and cemented in the public imagination. It is a case study in how mass media induces people to buy into “fake news.” Presenter Margo Burns is the 10th-generation great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse\, who was hanged in Salem in 1692 on the charge of witchcraft. She is the project manager and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt\, published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. \nPresented by the MCC Library in partnership with the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:Monsters of New England
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe supernatural is never far away deep in the New England landscape. Come hear stories in time for Halloween about a region rich in ghosts\, witches\, vampires\, lake-dwelling monsters\, cannibalistic ice giants\, and more beyond the imagination. The ideas of spirits are not merely sensational\, but often grounded in people’s understanding of the world. How is calling the bump in the night a ghost rational to somebody? \nCome find out more on October 30th from 1-2 with Professor Kim Kulesza\, an anthropologist of religion and magic (and a descendant of two executed “witches” of the Salem Witch Trials). Event located in the Student Center Pit. \nPresented by the MCC Library in partnership with the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:Wabanaki Storytelling: Gluskabe- The Magical\, Powerful Culture Hero
DESCRIPTION:In this traditional Wabanaki storytelling presentation\, Anne Jennison will introduce Gluskabe\, who is at the center of an entire body of lesson stories that are central to the Wabanaki cultures of New Hampshire and the Northeast. Gluskabe is not the Creator\, nor is he human; rather he is somewhere in between. Gluskabe has magical powers\, is as tall as the white pine trees\, and a friend to the Alnobak (the human beings). Layered with multiple embedded meanings\, Gluskabe stories reveal the central spiritual and ethical beliefs of the Wabanaki peoples. They teach traditional Wabanaki understandings about how to live in harmony and balance with Mother Earth – and what kinds of things can happen when that balance is disrupted. Each time a Gluskabe story is heard\, something new can be discovered. Anne Jennison is a traditional Native American storyteller and historian of European and Abenaki heritage. While Anne’s storytelling skills have been polished by more than 30 years of experience sharing Indigenous lesson stories with audiences of all kinds\, she also believes that her growth and development as a human being has been deeply influenced by internalizing the content of the Northeastern lesson stories that she tells. Join us in the Library Lab for a livestream with tea\, coffee and snacks or attend remotely on Zoom. \nRegister for an email reminder and/or Zoom link at: //bit.ly/gluskabe

SUMMARY:ARCH Bowl History Game

MCC will be hosting the first-ever ARCH (American Revolution and Constitutional History) Bowl at MCC on Friday\, April 5\, 2024. \nThis contest was made possible through a legacy grant by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and we hope it will become an annual competition between the CCSNH college campuses. The event will run from noon to approximately 8 PM and consist of preliminary rounds and a final round of competition in a Jeopardy-style game format. Each campus in the CCSNH system will be allowed to enter one student team into the competition. \nContact Laura Bilodeau or Kim Kulesza for more information.
