Introduction to Social Science

The Social Science degree program at Manchester Community College provides a solid theoretical and practical foundation in the social sciences. You will discover and explore academic interests within the field and be prepared for transfer to a 4-year degree program. Coursework at MCC will prepare you for entry-level positions in fields including politics, government, law enforcement and education.

This program offers the following Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree:

  • Social Science, (A.A.)

Program Goal

The Social Science degree program offers a comprehensive social science foundation that provides you with a theoretical basis for future study. Aligning with coursework offered at 4-year institutions, the Social Science degree program includes courses in history, political science and related social sciences disciplines. This degree program provides you with the first two years of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science or related programs of study such as pre-law, political science or history education.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Social Science degree program must comply with general college admission requirements and also provide a High School transcript or participate in an interview with an MCC Admissions Counselor.

There are no other specific program admissions requirements.

Incoming Transfer Policy

Courses will be considered for transfer to the Social Science program under the following conditions:

  • Any social science course proposed for transfer must be a college-level course and require a research paper.
  • The course must be listed on an official transcript from an accredited college or university and the grade awarded must be a C or better.
  • All social science coursework must be completed no more than 7 years prior to acceptance into the Social Science degree program. Exceptions to the 7- year maximum timeframe may be granted at the discretion of the Department Chair.
  • The Social Science Capstone must be taken at MCC. Transfer credit will not be awarded.

Other Requirements

Students must take a minimum of three 200-level Social Science courses at MCC to meet residency requirements.

* Liberal Arts and Sciences Elective: any course with ANTH, ARTS, ASL, BIOL, CHEM, ECON, ENGL, ENVS, ESCI, FREN, GEOG, GEOL, HIST, HUMA, MATH, PHIL, PHYS, POLS, PSYC, SOCI, or SPAN in the course number.

** Students may only receive credit for one section of each of the following topics courses: HIST203M and POLS215M.

*** POLS110M denotes a milestone course which must be taken / passed in the semester indicated to maintain good standing in the degree program.

**** Students in this program must successfully complete SOCI110M and may not take SOCI109M. Credit will not be awarded for both courses.
